Eventually I will get a 32 x 32 analog-to-Dante converter and do all my tracking on the Ghost, and then mixing on the X32 for the best of both worlds. I also have the added benefit of that very warm British recording console for all my inputs and that really keeps the tracks from sounding so digital.

AutoMate acts like an old school multitrack recorder remote control along with automation. Along with brilliant X32ReaperAutomate program, I can do pretty much anything I used to do in the 80s. I've basically been able to duplicate an old school recording studio with an inline recording console. Sometimes as part of Mastering, or just making EQ changes I'll send tracks to the Ghost on the Ghost bus (a linked pair of mix buses) and then I'll bring it back into Reaper through the Aux inputs and record new tracks in Reaper. If I wanted to monitor off the Aux inputs I certainly can do that. I use a Dante interface so the latency is not an issue. I normally take the Aux inputs off the X32 stereo bus and monitor the tracks from Reaper off the card to the corresponding channels on the console. Then I select those as the input to the track(s) in Reaper. comes in on the Ghost and then into the X32 Aux inputs, and I put those Aux inputs on the Record bus stereo pair. Whatever I put on those buses goes to the respective destinations. I also have a pair of mix buses that send out the Aux jacks to 2 inputs on the Ghost. I set up a record bus from a linked pair of mix buses (all post fader "subgroups" actually) to record tracks to Reaper. But the point is, while I'm tracking (and I'm a solo artist that tracks one instrument at a time, played in real time) I'm using the Ghost feeding the Aux inputs on the X32, so all the channels on the X32 are set to Card, not local inputs. I can even use the Ghost mic pres for microphones and I also can use the local inputs on the X32 for those mic pres if I want to. I have a Soundcraft Ghost console that I use for all outboard inputs to the X32, through the Aux in TRS jacks. I have never written any kind of an automation envelope in a DAW.

My Reaper tracks are routed 1:1 on the Routing Matrix and none of them are send to the master bus. I have developed a very specific workflow for using the X32 to overcome this limitation. You can use the XLR inputs for your synths but while you have the local inputs selected, the card wont' be available for track playback from the DAW on those channels. The genre is irrelevant but I'll tell you what I have experienced over the last 3 years.

I've never used an X32 rack but I use a full sized X32 exclusively in the studio.
